TIL Nazi General Loringhoven was inside the Führerbunker during the last days of Nazi Germany. He attempted to escape, was captured by Allied forces, and later became a NATO commander, retiring as Inspector General of the Armed Forces of West Germany in 1973.

TIL that after the Goliad Campaign in which Mexican forces defeated the Texian Army, an order came down to massacre the Texans. Mexican General José de Urrea who was responsible for defeating the Texans, was strongly opposed to the massacre but was ignored.

TIL that during the Battle of the Chateauguay, an American officer demanded his Canadian opponents surrender. However, the American officer had not properly displayed the truce flag. So, the Canadian forces simply shot and killed him and then went on to win the battle.

TIL about state adjutants general, who are the commanders of their state’s military forces. They are appointed by the Governor in all states and territories that have them (the CMNI and AS doesn’t), except for DC where POTUS appoints, and Vermont whose General Assembly elects for a 2-year term.

TIL Teddy Roosevelt’s 2nd son Kermit Roosevelt joined his father’s Amazon expedition and had a river named after him, resigned from US Army in 1917 to join the British Forces to fight in WWI. To join the first fight in Finland/Norway, he took help of Churchill to secure a commission in British Army.

TIL that during the Gulf War the coalition forces suffered nearly as many non-combat losses (145) as losses directly related to combat (148 KIA). This number is mainly due to a single C-130H that crashed while transporting 95 Senegalese soldiers.
