TIL the Reno 911! pilot was conceived and shot in 5 days. The team had worked on a series of pilots, one of which, after a year’s worth of development, was terminated the day before shooting. The team asked if they could make another pilot (Reno 911!) with the remaining funds, and executives agreed.

TIL Gustave Eiffel was sentenced to 2 years in prison and fined 20,000 Francs, due to the Panama Scandal. He was found guilty of misusing funds, as part of his involvement of the construction of the Panama Canal. He was later acquitted.

TIL Wachovia Bank, a unit of Wells Fargo & Co, paid $160M in 2010 to settle drug money probe. The systematic failure by Wachovia to maintain effective anti-money laundering controls had led to more than $400B in unmonitored funds being channeled to accounts at the bank between 2004 & 2007.

TIL that Aaron Burr, 3rd Vice President, used a yellow fever epidemic in New York to secure state funds to build an aqueduct. He used part of the money to complete the project, and the rest he used to start a bank, The Manhattan Company. Today that bank is JP Morgan Chase & Co.

TIL about the speed camera lottery in Stockholm, Sweden. Driving at or under the speed limit would make you eligible to win the lottery where the prize funds come from the fines paid by speeders. In the trial the average speed was reduced from 20mph to 15,6mph (22% reduction)
