TIL the painting Woman in Gold was stolen by the Nazis from its Jewish owners in 1941 and displayed at the Galerie Belvedere in Austria. The gallery refused to return the art to their original owners and in 2006 after a 7 year legal claim which included a hearing in front of SCOTUS, it was returned

TIL About Knoedler, an art dealership in NY that lasted for 165 years. It closed down after an art fraud scandal where dozens of paintings in the gallery turned out to be forged.

TIL about “Pierre Brassau” whos paintings were exhibited at a gallery in Sweden, earning praise for his “powerful brushstrokes” and the “delicacy of a ballet dancer”. No one knew that Pierre Brassau was actually a 4 year old chimp from the local zoo.

TIL that in 1931 the USSR sold off many of the Hermitage’s most important artworks (which they considered elitist decadence) to fund industrialization. Under Andrew Mellon, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. acquired 21 of them, creating one of the best ensembles of art in the Americas.

TIL An artist recreated 60 pieces of fake art from Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning. Then the art was sold for more than $80 million. 10 lawsuits were filed and a prestigious 165-year-old art gallery was closed once the art was found to be fraudulent.

TIL in 1999, Tom Green hung his own unauthorized piece of art in the National Gallery of Canada (which remained untouched for days) with the added twist of later coming back and vandalizing it to the horror of onlooking patrons.

TIL the Academy Award-winning documentary “Colette” was released as part of the gallery mode for the VR game “Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond”. Thus, though not mentioned by name in the citation, “Above and Beyond” is arguably the first video game ever to receive an Oscar for its content.
