TIL in 1943 two Germans were killed while mishandling ammo. The Nazis responded by rounding up 22 locals, forcing them to dig their own graves before execution. In a ploy to save them, Salvo D’Acquisto “confessed” to the crime. He was executed instead of the 22, saving their lives

TIL The bones of the fallen soldiers at Waterloo were exhumed from mass graves, ground down into bone-meal and used in the production of sugar at nearby sugar manufacturing plants. Also bones of the fallen were commonly ground into bone-meal and used as fertilizer.

TIL 94 US WWII Servicemen executed by the US Military are buried in “Plot E” of the Oise Aisne American Cemetery in France, a section designated for “the dishonored dead”. Hedges hide it from view, no US flag is permitted to fly over it, the graves lack headstones and it is not publicly accessible.

TIL there is US Military Cemetery in Tunisia, North Africa that is 27 Acres in size with 2,841 American graves. It was dedicated in 1960.

TIL that when the ancient Marquesan people, who became Hawaiians, first sailed to Hawaii, they brought pigs, dogs, and chickens to eat. These fat, slow dogs that mainly ate fermented Taro root were called Poi dogs and were eaten and sometimes sacrificed and placed in ritual graves with children.
