TIL Ancient Greeks referred to Subsaharan Africans as Aethiopians, meaning “burnt-face people”. Aethiopia referred to all of the inhabited land found to the south of Egypt. The Greek historian Herodotus stated, “the men are taller, handsomer, and longer lived than anywhere else.”

TIL “1” wasn’t considered a number by Ancient Greeks (even Aristotle & Euclid). Numbers were *multitudes* of units (1 was the unit). “One is the seed of number but not number.” This view didn’t change til 1701 AD, when 1 was defined as a number in the first math dictionary: “Mathematicks Made Easie”

TIL that Gandhara is a historical region in today’s Pakistan that was a Buddhist crossroads. In ancient times that region was influenced by Persians and Greeks due to Alexander the Great, the Mauryas and Indo-Greek Kingdom and became an ancient center of Buddhism.

TIL Ancient Greeks had gender reveal parties. Of course they didn’t have ultrasound, but they had a ceremony called The Amphidromia where a household would present their newborn to family and community. The house was decorated outside with olive branches for a boy or with garland of wool for a girl.

TIL The first central heating system was developed for the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus around 550 BC by the Ancient Greeks. It consisted of a wood-fired furnace and pipes that circulated the hot air underneath the stone floors.

TIL The history of the fork. It was invented by the ancient Greeks and introduced to to Europe in the 10th century by Theophanu Byzantine wife of Emperor Otto the 2nd. It made its way to Italy by the 11th century and had become popular amongst merchants by the 14th.
