TIL that dogs rub their noses on the ground and try to push their food around when they don’t want to eat anymore. This comes from the fact that wild dogs would bury the leftovers from the prey the killed and modern dogs treat the food they want to save in the same way.

TIL On July 26, 1931, a swarm of grasshoppers descended on Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota devastating millions of acres of crops. It was so thick that it blocked out the sun and one could shovel the grasshoppers with a scoop. Cornstalks were eaten to the ground and fields left completely bare.

TIL of Hannah Beswick; who was so afraid of being buried alive that she paid her physician to be kept above ground and be provisionally checked for signs of life after she died. She was finally buried 110 years after her death, being declared “irrevocably and unmistakably dead”

TIL that dogs have glands in their toes that release profile-specific scents when they dig into the ground— which is why they often scratch/ dig at the ground after urination. This is a way to further strengthen their “mark” on the territory.
