TIL of John Deydras, an imposter pretending to be King Edward II due to being swapped at birth. When arrested he challenged the real king to single combat and was found guilty of sedition. He claimed his cat was the devil in diguise and caused him to do it. Both he and the cat were hanged.

TIL about George Maledon, the “Prince of Hangmen.” A hangman for the Federal court in Arkansas, he worked for “Hanging” Judge Parker. In 22 years he hanged over 60 men and shot 2 escapees. Asked if he regretted his job, he said “No, I have never hanged a man who came back to have the job done over.”

TIL that in the 19th century, French doctor Louis Auzoux created papier-mâché models of the human body. Bodies of hanged murderers served as models for dr Auzoux, which is why his models have a head tilting forward (from the noose) and an erect penis (pressure on the cerebellum caused by the noose)

TIL In 1848 Irish Nationalist Thomas Meagher was sentenced to be “hanged, drawn and quartered”. Instead he was exiled to Tasmania. He escaped, became a Civil War Brigadier General and the Governor of Montana Territory. While Governor, he fell into the Missouri River and his body was never found.

TIL Guy Fawkes became involved with a small group of English Catholics, led by Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate the Protestant King James and replace him with his daughter. After the plot failed and Fawkes was captured, he gave up his seven co-conspirators — all of whom were hanged.
