TIL that Alistair Cooke, the host of PBS Masterpiece Theatre from 1971 to 1992, had his bones stolen and sold on the black market for use in bone grafts. The cancer from which he died had spread to his bones, making them unsuitable for grafts.

TIL in the movie Arachnophobia, the largest spider was a bird-eating spider they named Big Bob, after Robert Zemekis. Big Bob was adopted by a crew member named Jamie Hyneman, who went on to host Mythbusters. The little ones were controlled using a hairdryer and lemon pledge spray.

TIL ‘Wheel of Fortune’ creator Merv Griffin asked Alex Trebek to fill in as a last-minute replacement for a handful of episodes in 1980. When Griffin decided to revive his other show ‘Jeopardy!’ years later, he fondly remembered Trebek’s work and chose him to host it, a job Trebek kept for 36 years.

TIL that the brown-headed cowbird is an obligate brood parasite; it lays its eggs in the nests of other small birds. Once hatched the young cowbirds are fed by the host parents at the expense of their own young. More than 140 different species of birds are known to have raised young cowbirds.

TIL Casey Kasem, famous radio host and original voice of Shaggy from “Scooby Doo! Where Are You!”, wanted to be buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Instead, his wife had him interred in an unmarked grave at Oslo Western Civil Cemetery in Oslo, Norway.
