TIL that in 1966, ahead of the World Cup hosted by England, the Trophy was stolen during a public exhibition in London. However, it was retrieved just seven days later, wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge, by a dog named Pickles.

TIL Arthur Godfrey, one of the biggest stars of radio and early TV, hosted a show from 1946-1956 called Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts. Contestants included young Eddie Fisher, Tony Bennett, Don Knotts, Wally Cox, and countless others. He turned down Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly.

TIL that in Ireland 40 years ago, Malcolm MacArthur, a socialite with a yen for bow ties and cravats, bludgeoned a woman to death, killed a farmer with his own shotgun then attempted to rob a US diplomat. He was found in the apartment of the Irish attorney general, who had hosted him as a guest.

TIL The Jackbox Party Pack flagship game, You Don’t Know Jack, started life as standalone PC game 1995 and went on to get published on everything from mobile devices to OUYA and Roku. They even made a television game show out of the series, hosted by Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman).

TIL that Stephen Hawking hosted a party in 2009. He kept the event secret and publicized it afterwards, inviting future time travelers to the party. No one showed up, showing that travelling back in time is impossible.

TIL that Ken Jennings received a pair of cuff links as a blessing from Alex Trebek’s family the day he hosted the first episodes of “Jeopardy!” since Trebek’s passing. The only pair of cuff links he owns, Jennings often wears them as a good luck charm when he hosts the show.
