TIL Jerry Van Dyke (Dick’s brother) was offered the role of Gilligan on Gilligan’s Island but turned it down, believing that the show would never be successful. He chose instead to play the lead in My Mother the Car, which is frequently cited as one of the worst television shows of all time.

TIL the Pacific island nation of Nauru has been so damaged by phosphate mining that in 1964 Australia offered to repopulate the entire nation to Curtis Island near the Australian Coast. Nauru refused the offer in order to maintain their sovereignty and not become part of Australia.

In 1942, the U.S. forcibly evacuated 881 Unangax̂ (Aleut / Native Alaskans) from the Island of Atka, near Russia. Many watched as their homes and Churches were burned to keep the Japanese from getting them. In spite this, they remained patriotic and many enlisted in the U.S. Military.

TIL that Elephant Seals were thought to be extinct by 1884. In 1892 an expedition from the Smithsonian found what could have been the last 8 individuals on Guadalupe Island of which the expedition killed 7 for their collection.

TIL workers dismantling the wrecked MV Primrose off of North Sentinel Island were confronted by the isolated Sentinelese, but defused the situation by giving them bananas and letting them on board to acquire scrap metal. Workers were visited by the Sentinelese 2-3 times a month for 18 months.

TIL that three states did not vote for George Washington for president in the first US presidential election in 1789 – New York’s legislature did not choose electors on time, and North Carolina and Rhode Island had not ratified the constitution yet.

TIL that the British once tried to destroy an entire island after WW2 because they didn’t want it to be used as a fleet base for the Germans. This was done in “Operation Big Bang” where they detonated 6700 tonnes of explosives, which is considered one of the largest single explosive detonation.
