TIL that Hawaii was a sovereign self-governing kingdom all the way up until 1893, totally unassociated with the U.S., until a coup d’état that year by 13 businessmen and 162 U.S. troops, with the openly stated goal of annexing the islands. (They succeeded.)

TIL that in 1915, millionaire Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge for his wife, but she didn’t like it. In 1918, he donated it to the United Kingdom, recognizing its importance.

TIL Haiti’s only king, Henri Christophe, was born into slavery. Christophe had fought in the revolution and established a kingdom in Haiti in 1811. Ultimately Christophe established an unpopular system of taxation by forced labor and his reign ended in suicide in 1820.

TIL while trying to perform a magic trick to amuse his children, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (generally cited as one of the most important engineers ever) inhaled a coin which stuck in his windpipe. After a machine Brunel devised failed, his father proposed turning him upside-down, dislodging the coin.

TIL George Jennings invented the public toilet. It premiered at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and cost one penny to use the toilet. Since then, “To spend a penny” became a euphemism for going to the toilet in the United Kingdom
