TIL: In 1999 the Deer Terrace Pavilion was uncovered in China dating back to 1046 BC. It was a pool named the “Lake of Wine and Forest of Meat” which was filled with wine and meat was hung around it. King Zhou reportedly died there after his defeat and burned it, his jewels, and himself.

TIL There is one coal powered commercial ship still operating in the US. It’s a 71 year old ship used as a car and passenger ferry across Lake Michigan in summer.

TIL that 7,000 years ago a vast lake, known as Lake Mega Chad covered much of the current Sahara desert in north-central Africa. At more than 400,000 square kilometers (150,000 square miles) at its peak, it was larger than the Caspian Sea, the biggest lake on Earth today.

TIL that three years after winning gold at the 2004 Olympics, wrestler Rulon Gardner and two friends’ plane crashed into Lake Powell Utah. The three men swam an hour to the shore through 44F (7C) degree water to the shore and waited all night without shelter for rescue. All three men survived.

TIL about the “Old Man of the Lake,” a 30-foot tall, 450 year old tree stump, most likely a hemlock, that has been bobbing vertically in Oregon’s Crater Lake since at least 1896. Moving freely, it can be virtually anywhere on the lake, so boat captains commonly communicate its position for safety.
