TIL of a type of ant called a “gamergate”. It is a worker ant that can lay eggs and reproduce (unlike typical worker ants which are sterile), and some species of ants have completely replaced queens with gamergates.

TIL of ‘brood parasitic’ Cuckoo Bumblebees – they don’t make nests or form colonies; their queens aggressively invade the nests of other bumblebee species, kill the resident queens, and then lay their own eggs, which are cared for by the resident workers.

TIL the chicken is the closest living relative to the Tyrannosaurus Rex, they have over 200 noises for communicating, and some breeds can lay colored eggs. The Ameraucana and Araucana can lay green or blue eggs.

TIL Eastern Whip-poor-wills lay their eggs in phase with the lunar cycle, so that they hatch on average 10 days before a full moon. When the moon is near full, the adults can forage the entire night and capture large quantities of insects to feed to their nestlings.

TIL about the Horse, Sergeant Reckless. A Horse who served with the marines in Korea. She was able to haul ammunition by herself without a handler, would seek a bunker or lay down when under fire and received two purple hearts as well as other medals for her service in the Korean war.

TIL that a Smoot is a non-standard unit of length named Oliver R. Smoot, who in Oct 1958 lay down repeatedly on the Harvard Bridge so that his frat brothers at MIT could use his height to measure the length of the bridge. Decades later, he led the American National Standards Institute and the ISO.
