TIL Scott Joplin, the groundbreaking “King of Ragtime”, died penniless of syphilitic dementia in 1917 in a sanitarium at just 48 and was buried in an unmarked grave, largely forgotten until a revival of interest in ragtime in the 70s led to him winning a posthumous Pulitzer Prize.

TIL that there is a rare parasitic disease called Guinea Worm Disease that causes blisters so painful that people seek cool water to alleviate the pain, also allowing the worm to release larvae. The painful blisters led to this worm’s nickname of “fiery serpent.”

TIL during the Battle of Mars-la-Tour in the Franco-Prussian War, Von Bredow led 800 cavalry against a French force 4 times in size. He declared “it will cost what it will.” The charge succeeded, but only 420 men returned out of 800. It was the last major European cavalry charge in history.

TIL of the Aswan scorpion invasion. In 2001, a rare rainfall event in Aswan led to the scorpions evacuating their homes and coming into contact with people. Over 500 people were stung.

TIL that in 1971 the Shah of Iran threw one of the most expensive parties in history, costing hundreds of millions of dollars. It was attended by nearly all royal families and presidents, and spared no expense. The over extravagance arguably led to the islamic revolution and ousted him from power.

TIL since 2020, white LED streetlights have been turning purple because of a defect during the manufacturing process between 2017 and 2019. The yellow phosphor coating was delaminating, and the blue LED began showing through, giving off a purplish glow.

TIL Chicory has been a historic substitute for coffee. Frederick the Great banned coffee in Prussia which led to the mass production of chicory by 1795 and the chicory drinks were common in Napoleonic France. Chicory drinks also became popular in Confederate states because of the Union blockade.

TIL Jerome Jacobson led a fraud scheme during the McDonald’s Monopoly Game in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He worked for Simon Marketing, the company who distributed the pieces, and generated millions in illegal profits. The FBI caught the perpetrators during an operation called “Final Answer.”
