TIL during the Battle of Mars-la-Tour in the Franco-Prussian War, Von Bredow led 800 cavalry against a French force 4 times in size. He declared “it will cost what it will.” The charge succeeded, but only 420 men returned out of 800. It was the last major European cavalry charge in history.

TIL Chicory has been a historic substitute for coffee. Frederick the Great banned coffee in Prussia which led to the mass production of chicory by 1795 and the chicory drinks were common in Napoleonic France. Chicory drinks also became popular in Confederate states because of the Union blockade.

TIL Jerome Jacobson led a fraud scheme during the McDonald’s Monopoly Game in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He worked for Simon Marketing, the company who distributed the pieces, and generated millions in illegal profits. The FBI caught the perpetrators during an operation called “Final Answer.”
