TIL of Gilles Garnier, a french recluse living in a forest in France. Due to his lifestyle he had trouble finding food so he began hunting children and eating them raw, like an animal. People initialy thought the attacks were done by a werewolf, so he was convicted of lycanthropy and witchcraft

TIL Gypsies, aka Romani, are descendants of a nomadic tribe originating from the Punjab region of India, travelling across Europe around the 8th century. They retained many aspects of their nomadic lifestyle. The name “Gypsy” comes from the fact that people mistakenly thought they came out of Egypt.

TIL that breast cancer used to be known as “Nun’s disease” due to the higher prevalence amongst nuns, who were at increased risk due to their celibate lifestyle. An association between reproductive history and cancer risk wasn’t proven for about 250 years after it was associated with nuns.

TIL – An Italian man from Milan, Xu Xiangshun (his legal Chinese name) ended up in China’s countryside when he was around 3 and pretty much adopted the full Chinese peasant lifestyle. He doesn’t know any Italian or have a clue about its culture.
