TIL that the chocolate makers J.S. Fry & Sons had a famous advert featuring a crying boy who becomes happy after having chocolate. The boy was actually forced to cry after having an ammonia soaked cloth wrapped around his neck by his dad, who then took a photograph of this used in the advert.

TIL of in 1748, the first known artificial refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen. But the history of the ice makers begins with Oliver Evans, an American inventor who designed the first refrigeration machine in 1805 because Mr. Cullen never used his discovery for practices.

TIL the reason why Wine Coolers dropped in popularity in the USA after the 80s was because in 1991, the US excise tax on wine was raised from $0.17 per gallon to a $1.07, making it uneconomical for Wine Cooler makers to produce at a palatable price for buyers.

TIL – In 1948 the Mahindra car company struck a deal with Willy’s Overland Corp., makers of the original WW2 MB 1/4 ton utility trucks, to make a model for the Indian market. This would eventually lead to the feud with Jeep-Stellantis over similar looking vehicles.

TIL During the 18th to 20th centuries, hat makers used mercury to stiffen felt for hats. Over time, the hatters inhaled mercury vapors. Many developed symptoms of chronic mercury poisoning, including psychosis, excitability, and tremors. Thus birthing the phrase “mad as a hatter”.
