TIL that the chocolate makers J.S. Fry & Sons had a famous advert featuring a crying boy who becomes happy after having chocolate. The boy was actually forced to cry after having an ammonia soaked cloth wrapped around his neck by his dad, who then took a photograph of this used in the advert.

TIL: Japanese women are expected to give chocolates to male colleagues on Valentine’s Day as part of a tradition called giri choco – literally, obligation chocolates. Men are supposed to reciprocate on 14 March on White Day – an event dreamed up by chocolate makers in the early 80s to boost sales.
