TIL Royal Marines and allied forces defeated US marines during a five day simulation called Green Dagger. The US asked for a reset halfway through and the Royal Marines went on to control two thirds of the battlefield.

TIL of Jacklyn H. Lucas. 3 years after joining the Marines at age 14, he snuck onto a ship bound for Iwo Jima, stormed the beach without a rifle and threw himself on top of 2 grenades to protect his team. He survived and earned the Medal of Honor at age 17.

TIL just after WW2, the US occupied two provinces of Northern China with 50,000 marines to repatriate the 600,000+ Japanese soldiers and Korean conscripts still in China after the war since neither Japan nor either side of the Chinese Civil War were logistically capable of doing so at the time.

TIL that a 2x distinguished service cross recipient, 10x silver star recipient, and 8x bronze star recipient who earned 8 Purple Hearts, named David Hackworth. Left home and joined the merchant marines in search of war when he was just 14.

TIL That Smedley Butler was one of the most decorated Marines with 2 Medals of Honor. He served 33 years & became an anti war advocate. He wrote “War is a Racket” about war profiteering. He said “the best he[Al Capone] could do was to operate his racket in 3 districts. I operated on 3 continents.”

TIL about the Horse, Sergeant Reckless. A Horse who served with the marines in Korea. She was able to haul ammunition by herself without a handler, would seek a bunker or lay down when under fire and received two purple hearts as well as other medals for her service in the Korean war.

TIL LCPL Emilio A. De La Garza, Jr. A US Marine, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic action that occured on April 11, 1970 in Vietnam. He saved the lives of 2 of his fellow marines by Blocking them from the blast of an enemy soldier’s hidden grenade.

TIL Although both the Navy and the Marine Corps are regarded as separate branches of the military, the Marine Corps is technically a part of the U.S. Navy, ever since Congress placed the Marines under the Navy in 1834.
