TIL until 2020 there were only two factories producing the lacquer (acetate) discs used as masters to produce vinyl records… and then one of them burned down, leaving only a factory in Japan producing all masters in the world.

TIL that Kurt Vonnegut’s satirical novel, “Cat’s Cradle”, was accepted by the University of Chicago as a thesis in 1971 and awarded him a master’s degree in anthropology. The University had turned down his original thesis in 1947, rejecting it as “unprofessional”; “No damn cat, and no damn cradle”

TIL Dolph Lundgren has a degree in Chemical Engineering from KTH Sweden, a Masters from Univ. of Sydney. He received a Fulbright scholarship to MIT when his boss and GF, singer Grace Jones, convinced him to move to NYC where he worked as model, bouncer before his debut in A View to a Kill.

TIL that sportscaster Jack Whitaker was banned from The Masters for six years after referring to fans as a “mob”. Spectators at The Masters are referred to as “patrons”. Augusta president Clifford Roberts said “We don’t have mobs at Augusta” and demanded that CBS remove Whitaker from the broadcast.
