TIL Tupac Shakur’s group, The Outlawz, smoked his ashes. At a memorial held to the star shortly after his death, members of hip-hop collective, Outlawz, took the lyrics to his track ‘Black Jesus’ literally and mixed his ashes into a marijuana cigarette.

TIL that over 5,000 dead fish, crabs, and other sea creatures were embedded in the ice skating rink at Space World in Japan. Some were arranged to spell “HELLO”. Visitors called it a waste of life, so a memorial service was held and the fish repurposed as fertilizer.

TIL The FDR Memorial in Washington DC was designed to be accessible to people with physical impairments. However, vision-impaired visitors complained that the braille was illegible due to improper dot spacing, and in some cases was placed eight feet off the ground.

TIL The National Memorial for Peace and Justice displays 805 hanging steel rectangles, each representing a county in the United States where a documented lynching took place and, for each county, the names of those lynched. The memorial hopes that communities will take their slab and install it.

TIL Casey Kasem, famous radio host and original voice of Shaggy from “Scooby Doo! Where Are You!”, wanted to be buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Instead, his wife had him interred in an unmarked grave at Oslo Western Civil Cemetery in Oslo, Norway.

TIL I learned that a cornerstone of the Robert E. Lee Memorial on Monument Avenue in Richmond included a time capsule containing, among other seemingly innocuous items, a picture of Lincoln lying in his coffin.

TIL Miami has an underwater graveyard, Neptune Memorial Reef. Cremated remains are mixed with concrete and formed into sculptures, with a copper plate marking each sculpture, so that family can dive and know where to visit their loved one’s specific resting place
