TIL those concrete dividers on highways and streets are called Jersey barriers. Originally invented in the 1950s for use in New Jersey, they were first poured in place but are now pre-made and modular or even plastic. Taller varieties are used as defenses outside US military bases.

TIL that the French military has a long tradition of organising brothels for its soldiers, both at bases and near front lines, including in the Algerian and Vietnamese wars. The last one at a base closed in 2003

In 1942, the U.S. forcibly evacuated 881 Unangax̂ (Aleut / Native Alaskans) from the Island of Atka, near Russia. Many watched as their homes and Churches were burned to keep the Japanese from getting them. In spite this, they remained patriotic and many enlisted in the U.S. Military.

TIL about state adjutants general, who are the commanders of their state’s military forces. They are appointed by the Governor in all states and territories that have them (the CMNI and AS doesn’t), except for DC where POTUS appoints, and Vermont whose General Assembly elects for a 2-year term.

TIL: According to British historian Niall Ferguson, out of all recorded conflicts which occurred since the year 387 BC, France has fought in 168 of them, won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10; this makes France the most successful military power in European history in terms of number of fought and won.

TIL: The pre-game military fly-overs conducted while the Star Spangled Banner plays at pro sports events is actually a planned training run for flight teams and doesn’t cost “extra” as many speculate, but is already factored into the annual training budget.
