TIL: Grapefruits were invented in 1693. A man named Captain Shaddock shipped some pomelo seeds to the West Indies, he planted seeds next to some orange trees. After some cross pollination, the grapefruit was born.

TIL that Edith Piaf was named after Edith Cavell, a British nurse in WW1 Belgium, who saved the lives of soldiers on both sides and helped 200 Allied men escape German-occupied Belgium before being shot by the Germans for treason, and who is now included in the Church of England Calendar of Saints.

TIL New Mexico is older than regular Mexico by over 250 years. It was not named after the country, but in fact both take their name from the ancient Valley of Mexico which was the heart of the Aztec civilisation

TIL Much of old Lisbon is prefabricated. Following the destruction of the 1755 earthquake these Pombaline buildings (named after the first Marquês de Pombal) are four story wooden framed structures made in parts elsewhere and ensembled into blocks on an exact grid.
