TIL About the 1990’s Norwegian black metal scene. It became so dark and violent that it lead to several murders and suicides and the arson of 50 churches. Some of the groups were named Necrobutcher, Stigma Diabolicum, Thou Shalt Suffer, Grimm and Darkthrone.

TIL that after the peaceful dissolution of Sweden-Norway, the Norwegian legislature asked Prince Carl of Denmark to become King of Norway. He asked that the Norwegian people vote on a proposal whether to remain a monarchy. He was crowned King of Norway after 79.8% of voters approved the proposal.

TIL about HNoMS Pol III. With 1 cannon and 2 machine guns, this Norwegian PT boat attacked a Nazi invasion force made of 2 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser, 3 torpedo boats, and 8 minesweepers, rammed one of the torpedo boats, and launched flares to alert coastal defenses to the incoming invasion.

TIL that on the Norwegian Archipelago of Svalbard, it is illegal to die or be born. With a population of over 2500, if anyone is close to death or birth they are sent to the mainland.

TIL of XU, an intelligence agency that operated in Norway while it was occupied by the Nazis. Despite consisting of students at the University of Oslo and regular Norwegian workers, XU was able to survive being targeted by the Gestapo. The existence of XU was kept secret from the public till 1980.

TIL Famed Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen once believed tamed polar bears would be a better choice than dogs for pulling sledges. He tried to tame a bear cub he’d captured on a trip to the Arctic but killed it with chloroform after it attacked him. The stuffed cub resides in a museum near Oslo.
