It was considered a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style and one of the great architectural works of NYC. Its loss galvanized the historic preservation movement

TIL about the “Tilted Arc,” a slightly curved, leaning metal wall installed as art in front of a federal building in NYC in 1979. It immediately met with complaints and petitions for its removal, but remained in place until 1986. No other site wanted it, its now stored in a warehouse.

TIL 70,000 NYC geese have been killed in response to US Airways 1549 collision with a flock of geese (Miracle on the Hudson). 1,235 geese were captured and gassed and 1,739 eggs were coated in oil to smother the goslings in the months immediately following the water landing.

TIL that Jamaica in NYC and Jamaica in the Caribbean are derived from unrelated words. The neighborhood in Queens, NYC, is named from the Lenape word “Yameco,” or Beaver, while the island of Jamaica got its name from the Arawak word “Xaymaca,” meaning Land of Wood and Water.

TIL NYC could have been even larger. A referendum was held on the consolidation of NYC in 1894, which included residents of all the modern Boroughs as well as communities in Westchester County. Voters in Mount Vernon and Yonkers rejected consolidation.
