TIL that microorganisms are conditioned to treat our wastewater, specifically Phosphate (PO4). we reduce oxygen levels in the water to almost suffocate the microbes. Then we give them tons of oxygen bubbles. after that we but them back into anaerobic conditions. the microbes now eat the O of the PO4

TIL Rosemary Kennedy was forced back into her mother’s birth canal, depriving her brain of oxygen. As a child, she failed to reach developmental milestones; at 23, she underwent a frontal lobotomy to modify behavior, leaving her mentally crippled. She was institutionalized for the rest of her life.

TIL where astronauts sleep on a space station has to be extremely well ventilated with a constant flow of air over them. Warm air does not rise in space so astronauts in badly-ventilated sections end up surrounded by a bubble of their own exhaled carbon dioxide, the result being oxygen starvation.

TIL that Tibetans underwent the fastest genetic change ever observed in humans. Biologists found 30+ genes with DNA mutations more prevalent in Tibetans than their predecessors, half of which help the body regulate oxygen use. They even have a “super-athlete gene” called EPAS1.
