TIL during a preview of the Sistine Chapel paintings, one of the Pope’s men criticized all the “disgraceful” nudity. So Michaelangelo painted the critic’s likeness into the Last Judgement, wearing nothing but a snake that’s biting his dick.

TIL that Christopher Columbus’ smaller two ships were not really named the Niña and the Pinta. The Niña was actually named the Santa Clara, but was nicknamed after its owner, Juan Niño of Moguer. The original name of The Pinta is lost, and is only known by its nickname (the painted one).

TIL: Researchers in Botswana ran an experiment to reduce lion attacks in cows. They painted large eyes on the cow backsides. After several years, they showed fewer (zero) attacks on the eye-butt cows vs unpainted cows (15).

TIL in 1760s, Lazzaro Spallanzani demonstrated the first contraception and artificial insemination by fitting male frogs with tight-fitting taffeta pants. Fertilization occurred only when they retrieved semen that had been discharged into the pants and painted it onto the eggs.

TIL that Keye Luke (Number One Son, Blind Master Po from Kung Fu, and the old shopkeeper from Gremlins) was a successful artist before he was an actor. He painted murals for Grauman’s Chinese Theater, illustrated books and sheet music, and designed movie posters, including one for King Kong.

TIL in the 1960s David Stein sold three watercolors purportedly by artist Marc Chagall to an art dealer. They were fake as Stein had painted them that day. He may have gotten away with it, but Marc Chagall just happened to meet the dealer on that very same day. Stein became an artist after prison.

TIL A giant “Welcome to Cleveland” was painted the roof in the flight path of a Milwaukee airport (Mitchell International Airport). It was painted by Mark Gubin in 1978, and has inspired others to do the same near other airports.
