TIL The film Dr. No features a replica of the painting ‘Portrait of the Duke of Wellington’ by Goya in the villian’s lair because the original had been stolen the year earlier. The replica was used for film promotion and like the original it was later stolen.

TIL the painting Woman in Gold was stolen by the Nazis from its Jewish owners in 1941 and displayed at the Galerie Belvedere in Austria. The gallery refused to return the art to their original owners and in 2006 after a 7 year legal claim which included a hearing in front of SCOTUS, it was returned

TIL conflicting accounts on the sources regarding the date of when the Mona Lisa was commissioned and executed, has led some to theorise that the painting currently at the Louvre is not the original painting commissioned my Mona Lisa’s husband, but only a copy, while the original remained unfinished
