TIL that during World War II, USAAF Col. Paul Tibbetts was frustrated with his pilots complaining about how hard it was to fly the new B-29 bomber. He arranged for two women WASP pilots to be trained on the big plane and had them fly it around the country just to shame the men. It worked.

TIL supersonic flight was made possible because of the ‘flying tailplane’, where the rear wing moved as one surface as opposed to flaps at the back of the wing. At near Mach speeds a planes nose is forced downward due to ‘Mach tuch’, the flying tailplane allowed pilots to maintain control.

TIL that during WWII, the US Navy had two aircraft carriers operating in Lake Michigan, known as the Corn Belt Fleet. They were converted from 1920s paddle steamers and served as floating runways to train pilots away from danger. In total, 17,820 pilots were trained, including George H. W. Bush.
