TIL Dyess AFB in Texas is named for William E. Dyess, an Air Corps pilot and survivor of the Bataan Death March. During a training exercise, his airplane’s engine caught fire. Rather than bailing over a populated area, Dyess crashed his aircraft into an empty field. His decision cost him his life.
