TIL a bankrupted con-artist from Oregon was able to purchase a bank license and opened a offshore bank in Grenada by claiming to own a 4 pound ruby worth $20 million dollars and a appraisal document proving its worth. The ruby was owned by a man in California who didn’t know the scammer.

TIL In the 1980s, A&W tried to compete with McDonald’s Quarter Pounder by selling a 1/3 pound burger at the same cost. The product failed because most customers thought that the quarter pounder was bigger.

TIL that after McDonald’s introduced the Quarter Pounder in 1971, A&W tried to compete with a “Third-of-a-Pound Burger” for the same price. When it failed, market research revealed that many American customers believed a third of a pound of meat was less than a quarter of a pound, and felt cheated.

TIL the English 5 pound note was introduced in 1793 and was virtually unchanged until WW2. About 3.5 times larger than today’s notes, it was blank on the back and usually required a bank teller to sign it by hand.
