TIL General Patton had training grounds in the Mojave desert during World War II and tank tracks from the time remain visible. The area is now within the Mojave National Preserve and military debrit can be found along with the compacted soil.

TIL Pasteurization has been used by the Chinese to preserve wine since atleast 1117 CE. The Japanese started pasteurizing alcohol sometime before 1618. European experiments with pasteurization began with Lazzaro Spallanzani in 1768.

TIL of Huo Tuo, a surgeon who invented general anesthesia in 100-200 AD. After being sentenced to death for refusing to exclusively treat a king, his scrolls were burned when a guard refused to preserve them. Soon after, the king’s son died of illness and the king said he wished he never killed Tuo.

TIL that the Icelandic government banned the stationing of black American soldiers in Iceland during the Cold War so as to “protect Icelandic women and preserve a homogenous national body”. After pressure from the US military, the ban was eventually lifted in the late 1960s.

TIL UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention was created to preserve the Temple of Abu Simbel in Egypt. After the Nasser Dam was built, the temple was briefly submerged underwater and a large effort was undertaken to relocate the mountain it was carved on and rebuild the temple piece by piece.

TIL that a year after he was elected as khan of the mongols in 1186, Temüjin (Genghis Khan) was defeated in battle by his former ally Jamukha, and only returned to power 10 years later. Jamukha wished to preserve the aristocracy while Temüjin supported a meritocratic system to delegate authority.

TIL That “Gravestone Conservator” is a job. They restore gravestones as well as preserve and protect burial places in general. They work to preserve burial places as cultural heritage sites which would otherwise be lost due to time or wilful destruction.
