TIL that in 1933-34, with immense pressure on banks, the city of Detroit printed their own banknotes to allow employees to be paid, as well as utilities.

TIL: Between 1976 and 1977, Salvador Dalí signed 17,500 blank sheets of paper for tarot prints that had not yet been printed. This realization led to a huge increase in forgeries from printers who claimed to have used pre-signed paper for their “authorized” prints after Dali was bedridden.

TIL a mother who posted photos of her kids online came across an unknown page that had printed her kids’ photos and put them in frames all over their house. Authorities looked into it, but did not find a crime.

TIL Spitfire planes were “crowdfunded” in some cases in World War II. Large scale contributors were allowed to give the plane a nickname which was printed on the side. For example, ‘Dorothy of Great Britain and Empire’ was named by a group of women, all with the name ‘Dorothy’.

TIL of Samuel Upham, a Philadelphia merchant who printed over $15 million Confederate dollars from 1862-63. The fake notes widely circulated in the South. When investigated by the US Government, his case was dismissed as it’s not illegal to counterfeit currency of a country not recognized by the US.

TIL that stamps mimicking postage stamps but printed for promotional use by businesses, churches, political or non-profit groups are called Cinderella stamps as even though they are attractive, they are still seen as inferior by philatelists, much similar to Cinderella.

TIL the 4 Synoptic Gospel’s were probably written 3-5 decades after Jesus death based on oral tradition w different versions and different facts printed each century, and the earliest know versions are not in agreement about the date of Jesus crucifixion (before or on Passover).

TIL We call it a Wife Beater because in 1947 a man beat his wife to death in a tank top, and the newspapers printed pictures of him in a tank top referring to him as the wife Beater and since then the term has stuck
