TIL beneath the Puerto Rico Trench is a mass so dense it has a gravitational pull on the surface of the ocean, causing it to dip somewhat. The Trench is also associated with the most negative gravity anomaly on earth, -380 milliGal, which indicates the presence of an active downward force.

TIL that the Flag of Puerto Rico’s colors are not specifically defined. While its independence-era flags used a sky blue, and its readoption in 1952 used a dark blue to match the US flag, there is no official definition for what shade of blue must be used in the flag.

TIL that on February 6th, 1966, a mud dauber wasp nest caused Birgenair Flight 301, a 757 jet flying from Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, to crash into the Atlantic Ocean. All 13 crew members and and 176 passengers were killed.

TIL, the legend of the Chupacabra only dates back to 1995 and is thought to be directly inspired by the film Species. The first person who ever claims to have seen a Chupacabra “believed that the creatures and events she saw in Species were happening in reality in Puerto Rico at the time”.

TIL In 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists wanting Puerto Rico’s independence from US rule fired 30 rounds from the balcony of the U.S. House of Representates, wounding 5 congressmen. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter commuted the sentences of those convicted of the shooting.
