TIL that most blackboards are actually green because boards that were black tended to reflect a lot of light, while green boards reduced glare and were favored by teachers who had to stare at them all day.

TIL about the medical procedure called Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis. It involves sewing a tooth onto a blind person’s eyeball. Doctors use the patient’s own tooth and drill a hole and plastic lens is fixed inside. The lens reflect light onto the back of the eye just the lens of a healthy cornea.

TIL about Tote’m Stores, a convenience store in Dallas, TX, where customers “toted” away their purchases. In 1946, their hours were extended to 7am-11pm, and their name changed to reflect the new hours: 7-Eleven.

TIL Most of the time, it is perfectly safe to run the microwave with a metal spoon in it since it has rounded edges. It turns out that it’s the shape of the implement that matters. Cutlery with pointed edges can reflect the electromagnetic waves back and forth, often resulting in arcing (sparks)

TIL coin / button battery numbers reflect their physical size. For example the popular CR2032 battery you may have heard of means its 20MM in diameter and 3.2MM in height. The CR2477 is a 24MM diameter 7.7MM in height battery.
