TIL Holland is a region within the Netherlands, and in 2020 the Netherlands officially dropped its support of the word Holland for the whole country, which included a logo redesign that changed ‘Holland’ to ‘NL.’

TIL a killer whale off the coast of Washington started a fad one summer of wearing a dead salmon on its head. Other killer whales in the pod started doing it and within a couple weeks other pods in the region had picked up the behavior.

TIL that until 2001 it was legal for Austrian farmers from the Vorarlberg region, to blow up deceased cows on mountains. This was done to avoid transporting them by helicopter which would’ve cost about 1500$ more in today’s money.

TIL there’s a village in the Spanish region of Málaga (Andalusia) that celebrates 4th of July. Macharaviaya was the birthplace of Bernardo de Gálvez, one of the Founding Fathers of the US, who supported the colonists and their French allies in the American Revolutionary War.

TIL Pluto’s moon, Charon, has a rusty red section crowning its polar region. New Horizons investigators discovered that it comes from methane gas escaping from Pluto’s atmosphere due to its weak gravity and freezing on Charon.
