TIL Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow regions in the atmosphere, like rivers in the sky, that transport massive amounts of water vapor from of the tropics roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. They can unleash heavy rain and cause severe flooding.

TIL when endangered animals are seized, the location the animal came from can be determined by the parasites the animal has. Different regions of the world have different parasites. Parasites in animals can identify their source. This helps secure convictions for poachers.

TIL Snow is an excellent insulator because it consists of about 90–95 percent trapped air (fresh). This is the reason why igloos are warmer inside than outside, and why some animals in colder regions build snow caves to spend the winter while hibernating.

TIL about NSSM-200, an American plot in the 70s to reduce population growth in 13 developing countries that made up 47% of all world population growth. Aiming to further US interests in these regions in the long term. This plot has reduced Brazil’s growth by 50%. (more sources in the comments)
