TIL: In 1972 the death of Harry Truman forced the closure of all federal offices as part of a national day of mourning. Vietnam draftees scheduled to be inducted on this date had their induction delayed until 1973. In 1973 the draft was not restarted, preventing this group from ever being inducted.

TIL in 1984 javelin thrower Uwe Hohn threw a distance of 104.8m and became the first and only athlete in history to break the 100m barrier. Shortly afterwards some changes in the design of javelins were implemented and the records had to be restarted, turning his mark into an “eternal world record”.

TIL after flying through a cloud of volcanic ash over Indonesia in 1982, a 747 lost power in all 4 engines. After gliding for 14 minutes, all 4 engines were restarted, and the plane landed safely. The pilot subsequently founded a group for survivors of the flight: The Galunggung Gliders Club
