TIL about Cedric Robinson, the longest-serving Queen’s Guide to the Sands (a job created in 1548) that paid £15 a year and came with a cottage with no electricity or running water. For 56 years Cedric guided walkers across the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay, in the NW of England.

TIL that Doane Robinson, the historian who came up with the idea for Mount Rushmore, initially didn’t want it to feature former presidents. Robinson wanted sculptures of Lewis and Clark, Buffalo Bill Cody, Chief Red Cloud and other Sioux warriors but the sculptor refused to focus on regional heroes

TIL that to celebrate Fiji’s annexation in 1874, Governor Hercules Robinson took Fijian King Cakobau and his two sons to Sydney. All three came down with measles, but the colonial administrators did not quarantine the ship; a measles epidemic would kill about 1/3 of Fiji’s population.
