TIL a jet on autopilot continued flying for over 4 hours after all on board had died due to rapid depressurization. It was carrying 11 time PGA winner Payne Stewart. Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien authorized the Royal Canadian Air Force to shoot down the plane if it entered Canadian airspace.

TIL about Unsinkable Sam, a cat that survived the sinking of three different ships during WWII. He was supposedly on board the Bismarck, the HMS Cossack, and the HMS Ark Royal when they sunk before being transferred to a sailor’s home in Belfast, England.

TIL that in 1971 the Shah of Iran threw one of the most expensive parties in history, costing hundreds of millions of dollars. It was attended by nearly all royal families and presidents, and spared no expense. The over extravagance arguably led to the islamic revolution and ousted him from power.

TIL that in 1862 Lincoln rejected an offer for a battalion of elephants from the King of Siam (present day Thailand). The elephants would have been a follow up to a set of “royal gifts” which included a sword “of costly materials” already sent to the president. Talk about a white elephant!

TIL After the Royal London Wax Museum in Victoria BC closed in 2010, the museum’s general manager kept more than 200 wax figures in his basement. Each one has medical grade glass eyes, real human hair, and Queen Victoria has a prominent spot at his dining table
