TIL about the pig-butchering-scam, which is a new type of romance scam. The scammers don’t ask to send them money because they need help. Instead, they pose as successful financial players and suggest fake crypto-platforms or other sites to invest your money in.

TIL of Mike “The Durable” Malloy, an alcoholic who survived numerous murder attempts by life insurance scammers. After Malloy failed to drink himself to death as expected, they replaced his liquor with antifreeze and other poisons (to no effect) and later froze him and ran him over with a taxi.

TIL about the melon drop scam, a con that targeted Japanese tourists. Scammers would buy a watermelon for a low price and then bump into an Asian tourist and charge them about $100 for the broken melon. This is due to the higher fruit prices in Japan. These days the scam involves any broken item.

TIL in 1976 scammers tricked the French government to invest hundreds of millions in developing “planes that could sniff oil”. The scammer obviously didn’t know how to develop such a plane. This lead to a political crisis called “Great Oil Sniffer Hoax ” in 1979
