TIL “1” wasn’t considered a number by Ancient Greeks (even Aristotle & Euclid). Numbers were *multitudes* of units (1 was the unit). “One is the seed of number but not number.” This view didn’t change til 1701 AD, when 1 was defined as a number in the first math dictionary: “Mathematicks Made Easie”

TIL that Scotts Miracle-Gro Company knowingly sold poisoned bird seed for over 2 years. They sold 70+ million bags of bird seed with a pesticide toxic to birds to help with insect control during storage. Scotts paid a fine of $4 million and give an additional $500,000 donation to wildlife study.

TIL planting an apple seed won’t get you an apple tree with the same apples it came from. Instead, you need to ‘graft’ two trees together to get the characteristics you want.

TIL that when you grow an apple tree from a seed you have a 1 in 80,000 chance to produce a tree with tasty fruits because apples are not true to seed trees that need cross-pollination and the new tree will differ to much from the parent to taste good.

TIL If you plant an apple seed, the tree that develops from it will not produce the same apples as the one you planted. This is due to the fact that apples are cross pollinators, which means they require pollen from other types of apples to grow.

TIL that we now deliberately cover agricultural and horticultural soils with microplastics from seed coatings, fertilizer prill coatings and more. This is in addition to the accidental contamination of our soils with microplastics from wastewater, sewage, rain and dust.
