TIL Contrary to popular belief, the City of New York was not named directly after York in England, but for the Duke of York, who was later crowned as King James II. When England seized the area from the Dutch, he was appointed as its proprietor by his older brother, King Charles II.

TIL that the Omrides were a ruling dynasty of the biblical kingdom of Israel. The most notable Omride is King Ahab, whose wife was queen Jezebel. Their dynasty was ended when Jehu, an Israelite military commander, seized the throne and had all of king Ahab’s descendants and kin put to death.

TIL about Arlington House, which was owned by Robert E. Lee and Mary Custis Lee, the step-great-granddaughter of George Washington. It was seized and later returned by the government. Lee’s son then sold it to the government. Its grounds are now the site of Arlington National Cemetery.

TIL the Crusaders planned to finance the Fourth Crusade by stopping first in Constantinople, to assist in a coup. When they were not fairly compensated by the new Byzantine Emporer, they seized control of the city and surrounding territory. Establishing the short-lived Latin Empire (1204-1261).

TIL after Dec 7, 1941, fearing US currency might fall into Japanese hands if they invaded the islands, the US had 200 million dollars turned in and incinerated. Cash was replaced with bills stamped with the word ‘HAWAII’. Plan was to then declare the currency void if Japan seized the islands.

TIL in 2020 Customs and Border Protection tweeted that they had stopped a shipment of “counterfeit Airpods”. However, the attached photos showed that the seized goods weren’t Apple fakes – they were OnePlus Buds.
