TIL in the 1999 NBA Draft, Steve Francis was selected second by the Vancouver Grizzlies but refused to join them, citing “the distance from his Maryland home, taxes, endorsements, and God’s will.” He was eventually traded to the Houston Rockets and became a three-time NBA All-Star.

TIL that Michael Keaton’s real name is Michael Douglas. When he arrived in LA, the Screen Actors Guild rules meant he had to change his name. He selected K in the phone book and stopped at Keaton. It was nothing to do with Diane or Buster, he has responded when asked.

TIL of the high % of NASA astronauts that were Boy Scouts. Of the 312 selected as astronauts, at least 207 have been active in scouting. Of the 24 to travel to the moon, 20 were scouts, including 11 of the 12 moonwalkers, and all three members of the crew of Apollo 13.

TIL that despite being selected as Herbert Hoover’s running mate in 1928, Charles Curtis was almost completely against Hoover winning the Republican Nomination for President due to his pedigree as a progressive follower of Theodore Roosevelt, which did not sit well with conservatives like Curtis.

TIL from 1920 to 1946, Hungary was a kingdom without a king. Due to resistance against returning a Habsburg to the throne, Hungary was ruled by a regent, to remain in power until a new king was selected. Miklos Horthy ended up serving as regent for 24 years until he was ousted by the Nazis.

TIL NFL star Tom Brady was drafted in to the MLB in 1995 at the age of 17. He was selected in the 18th round by the Montreal Expos. He never played a single game. And he is the only active player who was drafted by the Expos.
