TIL about the Elephantine Colossus: A 200-foot-tall elephant-shaped hotel that was built on Coney Island in 1885, that housed a concert hall, museum, observatory, and more. It later became a brothel but burnt down on 27th September 1896 following a mysterious incident.

TIL that austrian poet Georg Trakl (1887-1914) was a pharmacist and served as a medical officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army. In the battle of Gródek (September 1914), he had to take care of 90 severely wounded soldiers all by himself for two days. Trakl overdosed on cocaine in November 1914.

TIL that a 639-year performance based on composer John Cage’s “As Slow as Possible” started in September 2001 and is still playing at St. Buchard Church in Germany. The performance by an automated organ plays so slowly that visitors have to wait months for a chord change. It’s set to end in 2640.

TIL the first female admiral in the modern world was Keumalahayati from Aceh Sultanate (now part of Indonesia) in Southeast Asia. She led their defense against the Dutch Navy attacks that killed Cornelis de Houtman in September 1599, who commanded the first Dutch Expedition to East Indies.
