TIL that Carlo Urbani, an Italian Microbiologist, was the first to identify SARS-COV-1 in Vietnam and report it to the WHO as a dangerous new pathogen. Urbani himself died of SARS himself shortly after, having triggered a rapid response to a potential pandemic, and saving many lives.

TIL when Prince Rupert was shot in the head, his commander said “Monsieur, I am most annoyed that you are wounded.” to which Rupert responded “And me also” His commander was killed shortly afterwards. Rupert would recover.

TIL shortly after the rock band Great White began performing in 2003 at The Station in Rhode Island, their tour manager set off pyrotechnics whose sparks ignited flammable acoustic foam. Within six minutes of the ignition, the entire building was engulfed in flames—100 attendees died.

TIL The lead singer of the Gin Blossoms was forced out of the band due to addictions issues, and the record company withheld $15k owed to him until he signed over most his royalties. Shortly after the band scored a hit single with one his songs. He committed suicide a few months later.

TIL of Dennis Johnson a 3x NBA Champion who measured just 5’9″ in High School and only played “a minute or two each game”, after working several odd jobs over the summer, he grew to be 6’3. Johnson was offered a scholarship to LAHC shortly after coach Jim White witnessed Johnson playing Street Ball.

TIL that Natale Olivieri created Yoo-hoo after several failed attempts to bottle chocolate drinks that would spoil shortly thereafter. After Olivieri observed his wife canning fruits and vegetables, Olivieri adopted the same heat processing techniques and began officially bottling Yoo-hoo in 1928.

TIL Jack Coe, one of the first modern faith healers, claimed a child was cured of polio and demanded parents remove his braces, causing the child extreme medical issues. Was criminally charged w/ practicing medicine w/o a license but judge dismissed case. Coe died of polio shortly after at 38 y.o.

TIL That, shortly after the Berlin Wall fell, Eugene Stoner, inventor of the AR-15, and Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47, met near Washington DC and developed a friendship that lasted until Stoner’s death seven years later.
