TIL about the Sumela Monastery. Built nearly 4,000 feet up the side of a cliff, it was founded in the 300s. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, mostly during the Byzantine Era, it was emptied and abandoned in the 1920s. Taken over by the Turkish government it has been restored for tourism.

TIL that The Maze, Utah ranks as the one of riskiest hike in the world. It is the least accessible district of Canyonlands. It’s a difficult place to navigate, with lots of side canyons and dead ends from the main trail. Food and water are scarce, and could take rescuers three days to reach.

TIL just after WW2, the US occupied two provinces of Northern China with 50,000 marines to repatriate the 600,000+ Japanese soldiers and Korean conscripts still in China after the war since neither Japan nor either side of the Chinese Civil War were logistically capable of doing so at the time.
