TIL Baptist minister Francis Bellamy, author of the US Pledge of Allegiance, was a self-identified Christian Socialist who said “Jesus was socialist” and advocated against the “evils of capitalism” and for separation of church and state. The phrase “under god” was not originally part of the pledge.
