TIL of Wenceslao Moguel, a Mexican soldier fighting for Pancho Villa who was captured and sentenced to death without a trial in 1915. He was shot 9 times in the body and once in the head but managed to survive and live (disfigured) until 1976.

TIL the last widow of an American Civil War soldier died in 2020. Helen Viola Jackson married James Bolin in 1936 when she was 17 and he was 93. He married her so she would receive his pension as a way of repaying her father for helping him with chores. She kept the marriage secret until 2017.

TIL about Joe Kieyoomia, a Navajo soldier who survived both the Bataan Death March and the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. He was tortured more than other prisoners because he was mistaken for being a Japanese American traitor. After the war he returned home to New Mexico and lived to 77.

TIL of ‘Thankful Villages’, 53 villages and towns in England & Wales out of 1186 in which every single military personnel survived WW1. Fourteen are ‘doubly thankful’, having also not lost a single soldier during WW2.
