TIL about Sokushinbutsu, a practice of self-mummification observed by Japanese Buddhist monks. The monks would follow a strict starvation diet until abstaining from eating altogether in order to lose as much body fat and moisture as possible. They would finally be locked in a tomb while still alive.

TIL of the Goa Inquisition in Portuguese India which enforced Catholic Orthodoxy from 1561 to 1812. Primary targets were Hindus who were forced to convert under imprisonment and starvation. All records were destroyed by the Portuguese in 1812 and exact number of casualties still remain unknown today

TIL where astronauts sleep on a space station has to be extremely well ventilated with a constant flow of air over them. Warm air does not rise in space so astronauts in badly-ventilated sections end up surrounded by a bubble of their own exhaled carbon dioxide, the result being oxygen starvation.

TIL the mother of the last Comanche chief was a white woman who was kidnapped at age 9 & assimilated into the tribe. She later married a chieftain & bore him 3 children before she was found at age 33 & returned to her bio-family. She never accepted white society & committed suicide by starvation.
