TIL about Radium Girls. In the 1920s women in factories painted watches and dials with Radium, a radioactive substance. Kept ignorant of the dangers, they were told “Lip, Dip, Paint,” to shape the brush with their lips. When the women got cancer the companies and doctors said it was Syphilis.

TIL Umetaro Suzuki extracted thiamine (which he named Aberic Acid) from rice bran in 1910 but his paper on the subject was poorly translated and ultimately ignored in the West. In 1912 Kazimierz Funk extracted the same substance and named it Vitamine.

TIL Vitamin B12 is very sensitive to acid and would be destroyed by the acid in the stomach, so saliva contains an substance named haptocorrin that has the only purpose to bind to the vitamin to protect it while it passes through the stomach until it can be absorbed in the intestine.

TIL in 1990, Coca-Cola ran a promotion in which some cans had prizes inside instead of Coca-Cola. To make the cans feel like normal cans, they also contained chlorinated water with a foul-smelling substance added to discourage drinking. The promotion ended after 3 weeks due to negative publicity.
