TIL about President Risto Ryti of Finland who, in exchange for military and food assistance during WWII, promised Germany he would fight the Soviet Union. Germany provided the supplies, and Ryti resigned, allowing his successor to seek peace with the Soviets.

TIL The Béarn, France’s only aircraft carrier during WW2, never launched her aircraft in combat. Instead Béarn transported supplies and spent most of the war in Martinique. On the ship’s only voyage to Europe Béarn collided with the USAT J. W. McAndrew killing dozens.

TIL the Battle of Gettysburg may have started because of shoes. General Heth sent General Pettigrew to Gettysburg because there were rumors of supplies of footwear, and many Confederate troops marched barefoot or with rags wrapped on their feet.

TIL that during the Mexican-American war, General Winfield Scott used the highly risky tactic of abandoning his supply lines and foraging for needed supplies to continue his attack. One of his staff officers, William T. Sherman, would later use this tactic in the Civil War in his March to the Sea.

TIL of Serge Voronoff, a French surgeon that was known as the “monkey gland man”. He claimed to rejuvenate his patients, transplanting the testicles of executed criminals into millionaires, turning to using monkey testicles when supplies ran low. Over 500 men were treated with his technique.

TIL the real-life Knight Rider was Danish. Helge Meyer was Danish Special Forces Officer stationed at Rhine Airforce Base when the war in Bosnia broke out Helge packed this “Ghost Car” with nothing but aid, emergency supplies and his bible. Earned him the nickname “God’s Rambo”

TIL that during the Prussian siege of Paris, supplies and food were so dire that after slaughtering all the farm animals and pets, eventually the animals in the zoo were killed. There’s even a copy of a restaurant menu from the time that included dishes like elephant consommé and roast camel.

TIL that, in 1995, the Kobe-based yakuza clan Yamaguchi-gumi provided essential relief to earthquake victims after a 6.9 scale earthquake struck the city. In 2011, they would also provide relief after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami by opening offices to the public and sending supplies.
